The Pokémon Presents yesterday was focused around two big announcements. Unless you’re a Pokémon Snap fan; in that case, three announcements. In my opinion, the biggest announcement (because it hadn’t been leaked and speculated for months and because it’s what many fans have wanted since Pokémon came to the Switch) was Pokémon Legends: Arceus. But the announcement many longtime fans are most excited about is the remake of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
I wasn’t surprised about this announcement. As I implied before, the remakes have been heavily leaked and most bloggers and Youtubers have been predicting them for the last few months. I was, however, surprised to note the style in which Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is being remade. I thought that Game Freak would have opted to use the game engine from Sword and Shield, but instead they went with the Let’s Go style, which prompted fans to compare it to the recent remake of Link’s Awakening.
The parallels with the Legend of Zelda series cannot be ignored. Some have called the two new games Pokémon: Link’s Awakening and Zelda: Breath of the Wild Area. Both games were incredibly successful and both games accomplished different things for the franchise. Link’s Awakening brought longtime Zelda fans back into the conversation and Breath of the Wild took the series into a new era of gaming.
If executed well, Pokémon Legends: Arceus will certainly move the Pokémon franchise ahead. Similarly, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl stand to bring old fans of the franchise back to the series. Many people I know stopped playing Pokémon after Gen IV. Platinum is widely recognized as the peak of the series, though Pokémon has continued to be successful despite its drawbacks. With the Switch quickly becoming one of the highest selling systems in history, fans who skipped Let’s Go and Sword and Shield will likely jump on the chance to replay their Sinnoh adventures.
This is also an excellent chance for people who have never played a Pokémon game to be introduced to the series. As I mentioned before, Diamond and Pearl are renowned as some of the best Pokémon has to offer. With the Pokémon Company’s decision to stay incredibly faithful to the original game, it would be an excellent place to start your journey to become the very best.
Are you excited about the Diamond and Pearl remakes? Are you new to the series, a longtime fan, or someone who stopped playing years ago? What do you want to see most out of these games?
