Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour was one of the first GameCube games I played as a kid. I still have fond memories of playing the game with my family and trying desperately for that ever-evasive hole-in-one. A new Mario Golf game is something I’ve long felt the Switch needed and something I’ve secretly hoped for the last four years. Thankfully, with the announcement from Nintendo at the last direct, Mario Golf: Super Rush is coming to the console.
The game comes with a few updates and modifications from the last Mario Golf game. The biggest change, in my opinion, is the addition of a speed golf mode. Surprisingly, though my foray into the golf world is limited, I was already somewhat familiar with speed golf from a video I came across while quarantining in 2020. The idea, for those who don’t know, is that your overall score is derived from a combination of your strokes and your time to complete the course. Most speed golfers only carry three clubs (a driver, a wedge, and a putter) to be lighter. We don’t yet know how detailed the mode will be – for example, will you have to choose your clubs and will it make you slower or faster – but we do know from the trailer that there will be power ups involved. This is probably going to be a go-to option when playing with multiple people. I understand why some people consider golf games to be boring, but this is an excellent way to spice it up.
The game will also include an all-new story mode. This allows you to play as your own Mii character and to progress through the game at your own pace. The key features include an RPG-like leveling system. You will be able to play as your character from story mode in the online play, which certainly has the potential to breed a creative and innovative competitive scene.
